Road Trip to South Hero

Lakefront Property for Sale, South Hero, Vermont

Hydrangea paniculata in full bloom at the lakefront property I have listed for sale.

Last week the fall foliage was nearing peak where I live in the foothills of Mount Mansfield. It was time to take a drive and photograph all my current listings so future buyers could see what they look like during Vermont’s beautiful leaf-peeping season. I also have one gorgeous lakefront property listing on Lake Champlain, which required a road trip to South Hero and a visit to that pretty area as well.

While the foliage was not quite as vibrant as it was in Jericho and Underhill the road trip to South Hero was still quite picturesque. At my South Hero listing, the property is beautifully sculpted to accentuate all seasons of the years. On this particular day the colors were mostly gold hues mixed with varying shades of green, plus one magnificent Hydrangea paniculata in perfect bloom at the entrance to the house.

Apple Picking in South Hero, Vermont

The day did not end with photographing the house and adjacent garage/apartment. Since we were in South Hero we had to go apple picking. A mile or two away is the Allenholm Farm apple orchard, with its blossoming rows of Macintosh, Cortlands, and many other interesting varieties just ripe enough for picking. Of course we purchased a bushel of “utility” apples for baking. I had never heard apples described as “utility” before, but the knowledgeable employee informed us that utility apples are slightly less than perfect, so they sell them at a lower price. They are still delicious and great for baking.

Dinner at Blue Paddle Bistro

We drove around and enjoyed some other island sites and as the day started getting late it was time to find dinner.

We chose the Blue Paddle Bistro, located on Main St. in South Hero. The Blue Paddle is not just for locals. It has a very large following and seats about 60 in two rooms and at the bar. The atmosphere is cozy and we loved the wall décor of fish relief sculptures and dog faces by artist Rachel Laundon. That evening it was so busy we nearly didn’t get a table for the two of us and our two friends who met us there. But our timing was perfect and just as we arrived a party of four was getting ready to leave. The menu is not a bit pretentious and everything looked and sounded delicious. Two of us indulged in the gorgonzola-crusted filet, another had the crab-stuffed ravioli, and another the rib-eye. Our meals were phenomenal and the service was perfect. I must admit I am a tad jealous of their Facebook Fan page. They have over 10,000 likes and I have never seen anything like that!

A road trip to South Hero was a fun way to enjoy Vermont’s beautiful fall season, visit an apple orchard where the apples are picked fresh daily, and the restaurant is as good as it gets, anywhere. It was definitely a day of Vermont at its finest.

If you want to take a look at that property I have listed in South Hero, or any other of my homes for sale in Underhill, Vermont, give me a call at 802-858-9193 or email at lea@pleasantvalleygroup.com. But hurry, so you can take your own road trip while we still have some fall foliage!
